Early Treatment

When Should My Child See An Orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an appointment with an orthodontist by age 7. Usually by this age the adult molars have erupted so the orthodontist can check the child's bite. Early evaluation can detect problems and provide the orthodontist the opportunity to help guide the permanent teeth into better alignment. Even though your child's teeth may appear to be straight, there could be problems only an orthodontist can detect. Sometimes an orthodontist may take a "wait-and-see" approach and check the patient from time to time until more permanent teeth come in and the jaws and face continue to grow. There is an ideal time to begin treatment and each patient is different. An orthodontist is the professional that has the knowledge to determine when the time is right for your child.

What Are The Benefits Of Early Interceptive Treatment?

Early treatment may prevent more serious problems from developing and may make treatment at a later age shorter and less complicated. Orthodontic appliances can guide the growth of young bones and create better space for the permanent teeth to come in. Early treatment gives the orthodontist a chance to:

***guide jaw growth

***lower the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth

***correct harmful oral habits (thumb sucking)

***improve appearance and self-esteem

***guide permanent teeth into a more favorable position

***improve the way lips meet
